Letter to all my readers, Surfers, Walevi's,
This Saturday I was chillin with my friends as usual at Reuben's house, The normal balcony hangout that this particular house has been known for. We always went to Reuben's digs to hang out at the balcony catch a few pints and call it a day. Although since Ken Small left for Atl the balcony lost most of its memorabilia. But last Saturday the spirit came alive again. This balcony is not just a place where jamas go sit and laugh the whole night, but its the only place where boys would open up. Personally I've shared some really intimate moments on that balcony. But anyway the reason why I brought up the balcony is because I always learnt something new each time I went to Reuben's digs, no matter how hard or how simple but a lesson would always be learnt in a day.
This week the boys were talking about some really deep moments back home...the one that really touched me was the fact that KTN ( a local news broadcasting station in Kenya ) really changed our lives. All of us be it in New York or in Nairobi. When the Network started they promised to change our lives, but only now do I really realize that they actually did. So to me the crew met their goals and Succeeded. -
A little history about K.T.N. I think the Newscast started back in the 90's I think 92 but am not sure as to there are no facts online that I could infer from. Well if I remember well enough I think the one thing they always used to advertise frequently before they aired any of their programs I guess it will have to be " KTN will change your life". They introduced the product and service way before the Kenyan Market competition was awake. The only other option then was K.B.C or then known as V.O.K. Which would air programs according to how the government felt like. K.T.N brought a new way of thinking, a new way of interacting with each other. As much as it might not seem so, I believe that K.T.N brought the whole hip hop culture to Kenya. People could no longer brag about "my sis brought me a music video tape Jana from stato.." Nobody cared who or what was outside the country at that time. All that mattered was the sheer fact that, what we were missing at that time is now here through K.T.N. from programs like Fresh Prince to music videos like Jam a Delic and Rap 'em.
The youth started dressing different, and even talking different because of this new exposed culture that was brought via TV ( KTN ). KTN changed my life, it made me run home to catch what was on TV. This was the dawn of a new era. This is what we strive to build at Mlevi and now Liveoc.com. We hope to change different individuals lives because Mlevi is you ,Mlevi is me, Mlevi is your next door neighbor. Most of all, Mlevi is us, when we are together sharing those special moments. Be it online, offline at a balcony, in a bathroom, or at the graves coz each one of us plays a specific role in making this net what it is today.
Yours Sincerely
Leo Faya, C.E.O and Founder of Mlevi, Inc ( www.liveoc.com )
